The Designer Who Unknowingly Crafted Her Engagement Ring
When jewelry designer Kitty Fuller, founder of Kitty Joyas, received an unusual commission for an engagement ring, she had no idea she was designing her own. This heartwarming story is a testament to love, creativity, and the beautiful surprises life can offer.
The Unusual Commission
In November, Fuller received an inquiry from a customer named Matthew, who claimed his girlfriend adored Kitty Joyas’ designs. He gave Fuller free rein over the design, which made her both excited and nervous. To get more details, she arranged a call with the mystery customer, who intriguingly asked her to design something she would love herself, believing his girlfriend would feel the same.
The Design Process of Her Engagement Ring
Fuller, known for her affinity for pink stones and chunky gold jewelry, decided to incorporate these elements into the ring. She sourced the gemstones from trusted suppliers in London’s Hatton Garden and began the meticulous process of crafting the ring.
The handcrafted nature of all of Fuller’s pieces is central to her brand’s ethos, with the ring taking several weeks to make. “Every single piece of jewelry is made in the studio by me and my craftsmen,” Fuller explains. The final piece featured a central oval diamond flanked by two smaller diamonds and pink stones, all set on a recycled 18K gold band.
The Big Reveal
After weeks of hard work, Fuller arranged for the client to collect the ring from her south London studio. To her astonishment, her boyfriend of six years, Alex, arrived for the appointment. He revealed that he was “Matthew” and proposed to her on the spot.
Fuller was shocked but delighted, as she had always dreamed of designing her engagement ring without ever imagining it would happen this way. Alex had been logging in and out of the email address from his work computer to hide the surprise from her, and it was his colleague whom she had spoken to on the phone.
Future Plans
With a wedding date set for May 2025, Fuller is excited to design all the jewelry for their big day. She plans to use beautiful old pearls from her grandmother for a pearl chain or choker and is looking forward to crafting Alex’s wedding ring as well. Fuller’s journey from receiving a mysterious commission to discovering it was her own engagement ring is a tale of love, creativity, and the joy of unexpected moments.
